A man and a woman walking in Pioneer Square last night were stabbed by a man thought to have mental problems. The 44-year-old male victim later died of his injuries.

The 30-year-old female victim remains hospitalized.

Police say at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, the victims were walking in the 300 block of South Jackson Street when the woman was suddenly confronted by the suspect, who produced a small knife and began stabbing the woman repeatedly in the torso.

The man she had been walking with attempted to intervene and the suspect turned on him and began stabbing the male victim repeatedly in the neck and torso.

Officers from the SWAT and gang units arrived on the scene first and found the suspect standing near the victims, still holding the knife.

The suspect dropped the knife and was taken into custody.

Police say the circumstances surrounding the assaults remain under active investigation but there are indications that the suspect was operating at a diminished mental capacity.
