SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Investigators determined Sunday that a convicted murderer who was found dead at the Oregon State Penitentiary Saturday was the victim of homicide.
The Department of Corrections says 45-year-old Joseph Akins was found in his cell Saturday morning. After an autopsy was conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office, officials determined Akins died of inflicted trauma.
A suspect in the death was identified and was held in segregation while the investigation continues.
The Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division was investigating the matter in cooperation with local prosecutors, which is common practice when the state encounters the unanticipated death of an inmate.
Akins was convicted on a murder count out of Multnomah County and entered Department of Corrections custody at the beginning of 2008. His earliest release date would have been in 2022.
