ALBANY, Ore. -- A horse suffered minor cuts and scrapes after the trailer it was in overturned on Interstate 5 south of Albany Friday morning, police said.

A pickup truck was hauling the trailer over a bridge near milepost 222 when the trailer came unlatched from the hitch, said Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The trailer flipped onto its side with the horse trapped inside.

A horse trainer came to the scene and tranquilized the horse before firefighters cut off a portion of the trailer, Hastings said. A tow truck came and stabilized the trailer so the horse could be removed.

He said the horse was moving around on its own after it was freed. It was taken away from the scene in a different trailer.

The driver, 18-year-old Kyla Henninger of Eugene, was cited for failing to properly secure the trailer.
