OREGON CITY, Ore. -- A dog was rescued by deputies Monday morning from an island in the Clackamas River.

Deputies were called just before 10:30 a.m. to the report of a dog stranded on an island near the 17400 block of South Palmer Road in Oregon City, according to Sgt. Adam Phillips of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Rescue crews got to the island at about 1 p.m. and found the dog, a 30-pound chow mix (pictured).

The dog initially struggled against the rescue efforts and swam across the river, but ultimately was brought under control and placed on a sheriff's office boat, Phillips said. The dog calmed down as he was being held during the boat ride and deputies transported him to the Barton Park boat ramp to meet Clackamas County Dog Services.

There was no collar or name tag on the dog. Anyone with information on a missing dog that matches the description was asked to call (503) 722-6519.
