WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon has been named chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The appointment to the position announced by his office on Tuesday puts Walden in charge of efforts to elect more Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives. He has served the last four years as deputy chairman of the committee.

Walden will remain chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees communications and technology policy.

In last week's election, he defeated Democratic challenger Joyce Segers to retain his seat in Oregon's sprawling 2nd District.

This is the second consecutive election in which he has defeated Segers, the former owner of a medical billing company.
