THE DALLES, Ore. -- A brush fire Sunday afternoon that came within feet of several homes was contained to 70 acres overnight Sunday.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames, said Stan Bercovitz of the U.S. Forest Service. He said higher humidity helped the effort.

KGW meteorologist Nick Allard said the high humidity would continue, but winds would return Monday afternoon.

Witnesses told KGW that flames were dangerously close to homes near the community of Chenoweth, northwest of The Dalles. Some homeowners used garden hoses to save their homes.

People who live in the area said some brush fires and smoke are common at his time of year, but the amount of smoke and the proximity to Chenoweth homes had them concerned.
