HOODRIVER, Ore. -- Thousands in the Columbia RiverGorge were without power Monday after a freezing rain and ice storm all weekend caused several road closures, including Interstate 84 at times.

Ice built up on top of deep snow in Hood River County. Most steep roadways in the county were closed during the peak of the storm. Trees took out power lines throughout the area.

Due to widespread damage, restoration times would vary, the county website said. Customers were asked to call (877) 508-5088 for estimated restoration times.

Heavy equipment operators were helping neighbors break through snow-covered driveways.

Warming shelters were set up at Immanuel Lutheran Church, near the intersection of 9th and State Street in Hood River and at the Hood River Alliance Church, on Rand Road.

As early as Friday night, emergency crews responded to several crashes along I-84. The eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed at milepost 52 because of the icy conditions. The westbound lanes remained open. Drivers were asked to find an alternate route or postpone traveling eastbound through the area.
