The Portland Winterhawks took care of business Sunday night before a crowd of 6,119 as they beat the Everett Silvertips 7-2 at the Rose Garden. The win gives Portland a 2-0 lead in the opening round of the WHL playoffs. Game three will be played Wednesday in Everett.

The offense started early with Nino Niederreiter scoring just 38 seconds into the first period. Craig Cunningham made it 2-0 at 8:34 in the first. The Silvertips made it 2-1 in the second period thanks to a Markus McCrea goal. The Winterhawks answered with five straight goals over the second and third periods. Niederreiter and Cunningham both had two goals each.

Mac Carruth, who had a shutout in game one, got the win in net for Portland. Carruth had 37 saves on 39 shots.

The Winterhawks were 2-4 on the power play, and 6-7 on the penalty kill.
