PORTLAND Protesters gathered in Pioneer Square and Lloyd Center Thursday evening to demonstrate against the violence in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed many Palestinian and Israeli lives.
Protesters called Thursday s event the Emergency March to end the Assault on Gaza.
The violence escalated Thursday, when a shell hit a United Nations school where Palestinians were seeking shelter. Fifteen people died and hundreds were injured.
Officials said the origin of the shell was unclear.
The UN refugee agency pleaded for an end to the bloodshed, saying there are no longer safe places for innocent people to shelter.
We say that the international community should move and do something in front of the killing happening in Gaza or we are going to see more blood in the next hours, a protester said.
