PORTLAND -- As temperatures passed 90 degrees Tuesday afternoon, MAX riders knew they could expect minor delays due to the heat. But many were left waiting much longer than they expected after two separate issues during the evening commute.

Around 5 p.m., trains on the west side started running slower due to hot weather. But then at 5:25 p.m., a mechanical issue caused trains to be delayed longer than 30 minutes.

Then, just after 6:45 p.m., another train issue caused TriMet officials to issue a major delay alert.

We truly apologize for the delays and we know it's hot out there, a TriMet spokesperson said. We are working on two separate train issues this evening. This doesn t appear to be heat related and we are trying to get regular service restored. We apologize for the huge inconvenience.

Trains should be back to regular schedules around 8 p.m.
