PORTLAND Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke at a special event in Portland Tuesday night.
Clinton is part of the International Speakers Series for the World Affairs Council of Oregon.
Each year, the speaking series brings influential world leaders and global experts to Portland to address significant issues of our time. This year s theme, Women Changing the World , highlights the work of Clinton, along with Sughar Empowerment Society founder Khalida Brohi, Nobel Laureate and Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, and China Interactive Media Group CEO Hung Huang.
Clinton spoke at the Keller Auditorium in Portland Tuesday. The other speakers were scheduled for later in April and in May.
Clinton served as the 67th U.S. Secretary of State from 2009 until 2013, after nearly four decades in public service. Earlier, as First Lady and Senator from New York, she traveled to more than 80 countries as a champion of human rights, democracy, and opportunities for women and girls.
The website promoting the International Speakers Series endorses Clinton for her smart power approach to foreign policy and her central role in reasserting the United States as a Pacific power, imposing crippling sanctions on Iran and North Korea, and responding to the Arab Awakening and negotiating a ceasefire in the Middle East.
