PORTLAND -- A man suspected of shooting his neighbor in the leg in downtown Portland Tuesday evening was being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his testicles, police said.

Witnesses told police they heard an argument in a parking lot about 8 p.m. The victim ran to a nearby Safeway store after he was shot in the leg, said Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The alleged shooter ran back into an apartment building at Southwest 9th Avenue and Columbia Street where both men live.

While police surrounded the building and closed adjacent streets, officers found the 40-year-old suspect nearby at Southwest 6th Avenue and Mill Street. He also had a gunshot wound consistent with somebody putting a gun in his pants, Simpson said.

The dispute that led to the shooting may actually have been a robbery, Simpson said.

Both men were expected to survive their wounds.
