STEVENSON, Wash. -- A Vancouver woman fell Wednesday on Mount St. Helens and suffered unspecified injuries, with a friend building a snow cave to keep her warm until rescue crews arrived.

Alana McCammon, 28, fell near the Climber's Bivouac trailhead at the 7,000-foot level.

She made an abrupt stop after the fall, said Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox. Her climbing partner, 25-year-old Kyle Knight of Petersburg, Alaska, hiked out to a call box to notify dispatchers.

Rescue crews were called just before 9 p.m. and reached her within about two-and-a-half hours. She was airlifted from the site to the rescue command post at sunrise. She was taken by ambulance to Peace Health SWMedical Center.

Overnight temperatures at Climber s Bivouac dropped to 14 degrees, said KGW meteorologist Nick Allard.
