PORTLAND A 20-year-old man was sent to the hospital after he was hit and left on the road in Southwest Portland early Friday.

Just before 1 a.m., Henry Schmidt was just coming home from work at a restaurant when he was hit on Barbur Boulevard near Capital Highway.

Now, he's in the trauma ICU at OHSU and his mom says it'll be two weeks before he's mobile again.

Schmidt has several broken bones, a laceration to his spleen, fractures in his spine and really bad road rash and bruises.

A bus stopped after seeing Schmidt in the road, and two people got off the bus to help him. One of the people called his parents from the cell phone in his backpack.

Schmidt s parents immediately flew to Portland from the Los Angeles area. His mother was pleading with anyone who has information to call police.

The part that really shakes that someone could be involved in such a serious accident and just leave, said Kathi Sweet, Schmidt s mother.

Schmidt did not see what hit him or what direction the car went after the crash. There were no witnesses to the crash, but police are hoping someone saw something.

Meanwhile, Schmidt has a long road to recovery but is expected to survive his injuries.
