HILLSBORO, Ore. -- For the fourth year in a row, a huge crowd turned out to honor and remember a beloved Portland police officer.
In 2008 officer Mark Zylawy, affectionately known as Z-Man, was hit and killed by a semi-truck on Interstate 5.
The wrestling tournament in Hillsboro is just one of the events held each year by the Z-Man Scholarship Foundation.
Friends and fellow officers created the foundation to give back to the community in Zylawy s name. Portland Police Chief Mike Reese said Sunday's event was all about getting kids and police officers together.
Mark's legacy was really about connecting police officers and the community, Reese said. He was loved by the community and by our department; a very well-respected officer. The values that he embodied are alive in all of these officers here today.
Close to 700 wrestlers signed up for the event. Dozens of uniformed police officers, firefighters and National Guard soldiers also volunteered their time to staff the tournament.
