CORBETT, Ore. -- Officials from Corbett Elementary School and the family of fallen Navy SEAL Jeff Lucas talked out a dispute involving the soldier s memorial Thursday.

Friends and family were very upset after the school announced plans to reroute buses right next to the Lucas memorial that sits between the school and the football field.

The superintendent could see that this issue was close to the hearts of those who cared deeply for Lucas.

We tried to come up with a win-win solution, he said.

Seven years ago, Lucas helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan and two years ago the brick memorial was dedicated at the school he attended.

Jeff was not only a friend, a brother, he was a patriot, said Larry McDougal, one of the driving forces behind the memorial s construction.

Officials decided on a costly plan to reroute the buses away from the memorial, and a local contractor said he would do the work at a discount.

The new plan is a way to keep current students safe while still honoring a former student.
