EUGENE - Life is good for Portland's Rachel Yurkovich. It's an Olympic year and Rachel has the top women's javelin throw in the country at 200 feet, four inches.
It's crazy to be on top this year,' says Yurkovich. So I'm just really happy that, you know, my hard work is paying off and it's so much more fun when you do well.
Yurkovich knows what that's like. Rachel went to Newberg High School and set the National Prep Record in the women's javelin in 2005.
Then it was on to the University of Oregon, where she won two NCAA Titles and set a school record.
Four years ago, Yurkovich finished third in the U.S. Trials in Eugene, but missed the American Olympic team because she did not meet the Olympic standard in the javelin.
Rachel has already reached the Olympic A standard this year and is focused and ready.
I never really expected to be on that Olympic team, says Rachel adding, but you know I'm ready for it this year and I'm just excited and tobe back in Eugene for trials.
The 25-year-old was featured in the ESPN the Magazine body issue in 2010 and has done some other modeling as well. Yeah I do a little bit of stuff, says Yurkovich. Mostly in the off-season, October-ish and stuff like that.
But now it's track season, filled with Olympic dreams, and the U.S. Track and Field trials at Historic Hayward Field.
There's no other place like in thestates track and field-wise, says Yurkovich. The atmosphere is amazing, the fans are amazing and hopefully they still remember me.
I'm sure they will, and many more will get to know her name.
