PORTLAND As more skateboarders and bicyclists take to Portland sidewalks during the summer, police are working to prevent collisions with pedestrians.

Officers on Thursday afternoon will be giving warnings, and in some cases citations, to people they catch using sidewalks improperly.

It s illegal to ride a bicycle, skateboard, skates, scooters or other similar devices on a sidewalk, unless the person is trying to avoid a traffic hazard, according to Portland City Code. This applies to the area bounded by and including SW Jefferson, Front Avenue (Naito Parkway), NW Hoyt and 13th Avenue.

The Portland Police Bureau conducts numerous and varied traffic, bicycle and pedestrian safety missions throughout the year, with the goal of increasing awareness and safety.

Anyone who wants to share their opinions on this or other traffic safety issues, can log onto the Portland Bureau of Transportation website and post comments online.
