PORTLAND -- Two young Portland artists are celebrating national honors for their work.

Both Scholastic Art & Writing Award winners are eighth graders at Da Vinci Middle School.

I didn t even read the email, said Alisa Folen, I didn t think I had a chance but my teacher told me about it.

Folen received a silver national award from Scholastic for her photograph titled Captured.

Her classmate Alicia Muldrew earned the highest honor, a gold award. I entered a mask inspired by Alice in Wonderland, explained Muldrew, I call it Mad Bunny.

The judges consider more than 225,000 pieces of art and writing. Only 1% were recognized as national winners.

The students have been invited to a ceremony at Carnegie Hall and their work will be displayed in New York.

it s easy to express my feelings though art but not so much with words, commented Muldrew.

The great thing about Da Vinci Middle school is that everyone finds their talent, added Folen.

The two students are the school s first in its 18 year history to receive national honors from Scholastic.
