PORTLAND Ron Tonkin, one of Portland s most recognizable business leaders, died Friday at age 82.

According to The Oregonian, Tonkin died of end-stage renal failure. Tonkin started a chain of auto dealerships that swelled to become one of the largest dealership chains in the state.

Tonkin was not only recognizable by name, but would often star in his own local television spots, making him a familiar face to people around the Portland area.

In 1989, Tonkin was named chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association after his dealerships became nationally recognized as one of the largest and most successful in the country.
