PORTLAND A Multnomah County Jail deputy was hospitalized after he and another deputy were attacked by an inmate Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

At 1:40 p.m., two deputies were leading 28-year-old Veikoso Moala (pictured) from his cell when he rushed the door and slammed it into them, causing one deputy to fall and hit the corner wall, said Lt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office.

The keys stayed in the door and a sergeant in the housing unit ordered Moala back in his cell and called for backup, Alexander said.

Deputies said Moala then pulled the keys out and threw them at the sergeant.

The sergeant then took out his Taser and hit Moala before other deputies arrived and secured him, Alexander said.

The deputy who fell was taken in an ambulance to the hospital with a back injury. The sergeant was treated for a puncture wound to his hand from blocking the thrown keys.

Moala was booked in the jail July 21 on DUII and reckless driving charges.

The Multnomah County Jail was on lockdown until 4:45 p.m. while an investigation was conducted.
