PORTLAND -- Two men were hurt in a Northwest Portland apartment fire Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Crews were called just before 2:30 p.m. to the report of smoke coming from a unit in the Pearl Court Apartments at 920 NW Kearney St.
A spokesman for Portland Fire and Rescue said when firefighters arrived, Portland police were trying to enter the apartment while smoke was pouring out of the front door. Crews could hear screams coming from inside the building.
Responding firefighters forced the door open and rescued two men and a service dog.
Firefighters found that the fire had been contained in the apartment's kitchen.
One man suffered burn injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. The other suffered smoke inhalation. Both were taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.The dog was not hurt.
Firefighters extinguished the fire. Traffic was affected around the fire but was cleared Tuesday evening.
Fire investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
