PORTLAND Friends of a Portland bicyclist who was run over by a moving van say the victim won t return to work as a pedicab driver for quite some time, so they are trying to raise money to help him.

Dave Collins headed out on his bike to run some errands last week near North Fremont Street and Borthwick Avenue when he was struck by the van.

Before I knew it, I was just under it and the van just kept going for about another 20 to 30 feet. I was pretty much pinned, he said Wednesday. The driver came out and took out his car jack and jacked it up several times and I was able to kind of climb out.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he s still recovering after several surgeries. Meanwhile his friends have put together a fundraising website to help him while he s out of work.

Dave got hit by car, dragged underneath it, and held underneath it via the muffler, the website statement reads. Let's help Dave because he cannot pedicab the next couple of months. Thank you.

The driver was cited in the crash.

Despite skin graft surgeries on what he called all four corners of his body, Collins said he s lucky it wasn t worse. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Get a helmet. I wasn't wearing one at the time, but I already have one on order. It happens in a split second. And I was just running errands, he said. I was three blocks from my house. And then in half a second I was underneath a van.
