PORTLAND -- Two young men were hurt in a crash that also knocked out power to some customers in Northwest Portland Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The men were driving a Volkswagen Cabrio westbound down Northwest Germantown Road when they lost control and crashed into a power pole near Northwest Skyline Boulevard just after 1 p.m., according to Lt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

The car was wrapped around the pole. One of its occupants suffered life-threatening injuries, Alexander said. The other occupant was severely injured, but he was expected to survive. Both were taken to nearby hospitals.

Alexander said speed was most likely a contributing factor in the crash.

Germantown Road was closed for two miles at Skyline Boulevard during the investigation. It was reopened Tuesday night.

There was no word on how many customers lost power after the crash.
