The I-5 bridge collapse over the Skagit River in Mount Vernon completely shut down Interstate 5 Thursday night, paralyzing traffic in both directions on the main north-south thoroughfare through Skagit County 60 miles north of Seattle.

As the emergency effort continues at the scene, traffic on I-5 through Mount Vernon was being diverted.

If you are heading northbound, you can take Highway 538 to Highway 9 to Highway 20 then back to Interstate 5.

If you are heading southbound, you can take Highway 20 to Highway 536 to Interstate 5.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

With the Memorial Day weekend starting Friday, residents heading north for the holiday should plan avoiding I-5 together.
