PORTLAND Although temperatures are expected in the 80s this week in Portland, area rivers are still running cold, high and fast - more like spring.

Water temperatures on the Willamette River Thursday were in the upper 50s and low 60s.

There has been a steady stream of people launching their boats, many for the first time this year.

You might jump in at High Rocks in August and really not float far downstream, water s a little bit warmer. But what we re dealing with right now, you jump today and you re going to be 50 yards downstream before you know because the water flow is a lot stronger, Clackamas deputy Nate Thompson said.

Some popular outdoor swimming holes also have lifeguards, including High Rocks and Glenn Otto Park.

Preliminary data released by the Oregon Health Authority shows that in 2012 there were 52 drownings in the state.

Rescuers said the best advice is to always wear a life-jacket. And never go swimming by yourself.
