BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Construction now under way in Beaverton s Cedar Hills Crossing is expected to create about 300 new jobs.

The project has reached phase two after the creation of 23,000 square feet of new retail space between Jenkins and Walker roads.

The idea has been in the works for a while. Industry experts said it's an indication that retail continues to recover in this economy.

The latest trends show that retailers are looking for less square footage overall, with fewer big box stores.

The retail space will include a mix of services, restaurants and traditional stores.

There are only a few areas that have the capacity, and especially the ground space, right now to facilitate a project of this magnitude, explained Brian Greeley, Vice President of leasing with CE John Company. With Nike, Tektronics, and Intel, there's a lot of jobs out here (in the Beaverton area). There are a lot of people living out here. So there's a great density.

Cedar Hills Crossing is one of the oldest shopping centers in the area. It began as the Beaverton Mall in 1969. The mall had a major face-lift in 2002 when Old Navy and Best Buy became tenants.

Many of the new stores will be ready to open in the fall.
