PORTLAND - After 30 years, The Refectory on Northeast 122nd and Halsey is saying goodbye.

Since 1982 it has been a go-to place to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving and all those special occasions.

Owner Mitch Stanley was 38-years-old when he bought the restaurant from first owner Bill McCormick. Over the years the restaurant expanded three times.

But now the landlord, Harsch Investments, wants to bring in a national retailer.

Stanley tried to renegotiate his lease using less space and a lower payment, which did not work out. He says the landlord cited some late rent payments as the reason.

My true desire, was to be able to sell it to my employees and me to kind of mentor them and then slowly migrate out of here, as opposed to going this way and falling off a cliff, Stanley said.

He hopes to find a smaller location nearby and reopen.

Sunday is the last day the restaurant will be open. A Motown review is planned from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
