KEIZER, Ore. -- A wanted fugitive was shot by police after a pursuit in Keizer Wednesday morning, police said.

The shooting happened near Lockhaven Drive NE and Inland Shores Way NE, according to Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada.

Just before 9 a.m., Salem officers tried to stop a car near the intersection of Cordon Road NE and Carolina Avenue NE. The driver, 29-year-old Gabriel Diaz, had three outstanding warrants for sex abuse since February, 2012, police said.

Diaz was able to avoid spike strips that were placed in the road during the chase. Then, officers said they were finally able to block his vehicle near the intersection of Inland Shores Way N and Lockhaven Drive N.

Witnesses told police that when the suspect exited his vehicle, he had an object in his hand. He failed to comply with the officers' commands and then officer Bruce Fineran fired his weapon, police said.

Diaz was transported to Salem Hospital for undisclosed injuries. No one else was hurt.

Fineran, a 21-year veteran with the Salem Police Department, and other officers were placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
