SPOKANE -- It s been a little over three months since the City of Spokane converted to single-stream recycling. The city says it is already seeing twice as many recycled items as it did with the old system.

The City of Spokane says it has picked up more than 800 tons of recyclables, which means $80,000 in savings from not having to dispose those items as garbage. Cardboard and paper materials have increased the most.

One customer we talked to says he has seen his own recycling rate double because the new system is more convenient.

It s just so good that you can just put it all in there, you don t have to sort it all out of anything, said Dustin Cox.

Because of the switch, 2500 Spokane homes have now downsized their garbage carts. That saves about $12 every month.
