BEAVERTON -- A car crashed onto the MAX tracks near the Sunset Transit Center early Wednesday morning, halting train traffic all day through the area.

The car's driver, 27-year-old Jeff John Roberton, was arrested and accused of reckless driving, DUII and first-degree criminal mischief.

Giovanni Lam saw the crash out the corner of his eye and rushed over to help the driver.

I heard a screech and I looked in that direction and I saw part of the car flipped, he said. (I) asked him if he was OK and he was just shaking, the other guy was kind of like trying to calm him down.

Shuttle buses were being used between the Beaverton Transit Center and the Washington Park Station until 4 p.m.

A crane was used to remove the BMW from the tracks about 5:30 a.m. Inspection of overhead wires led to an estimate of 6 p.m. Wednesday for train service to resume.

The wires were destroyed by the car, said agency spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt.

Police radar recorded the speed of the BMW at 80 mph plus before the crash, said Lt. Michael Rouches of the Beaverton police.

The car came to rest on the westbound tracks. A fallen tree rested on the eastbound tracks, he said.
