PORTLAND -- One person is dead and two others hurt after a two-alarm apartment complex fire broke out in Southeast Portland Friday morning, said Ron Rouse with Portland Fire & Rescue.
The family of 56-year-old Berna Dizer said she was unable to get out of her apartment at Southeast 157th
Avenue and Southeast Division Street when the fire started around 8:30 a.m.
I don't really know what I'm feeling, said nephew Deandre Smith. I just talked to her at 7 o'clock this morning and I told her ... late this afternoon, I'll be by your house.
Smith said his aunt suffered from Lou Gehrig's Disease and was confined to her bed.
The cause of the fire that engulfed two units of the complex was under investigation. Two other victims are being treated for injuries.
Traffic in the area was shut down as crews battled the fire.
