It was just a miserable night at Jeld-Wen field, except for the fact that it was a perfect night at Jeld-Wen field.

The Timbers opened the 2012 MLS season (their second in the league), with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. After surprisingly uninspired 1st half, the club responded during the final 45-minutes.

I asked them, Coach John Spencer said of his halftime talk, if we could go out and play some Timbers football with energy and passion. And I think we did that. It was a great response.

And a great debut for a couple of Portland s new additions. Andrew Jean-Baptiste scored his first goal to tie the game at 1 in the 54th minute, and Kris Boyd tallied the game-winning goal with a brilliant header in the 65th minute.

It s always good to score the first one, the Striker from Scotland said. because that s always the most difficult. Jack Jewsbury added, I m sure it s the first of many. It s great to have him here.

Kalif Alhassan scored the third goal on a pretty chip shot, and earned MLS player of the week honors becoming the first Timbers player to do so. Perfect.

It took the Timbers three matches to earn their first win of last season. This year, they were an opening night smash!

I told the guys, these are the nights you ll remember when you re done playing, said Jewsbury, the teams captain.

They ll remember this night for being miserable. And perfect.
