PORTLAND -- The Portland Winterhawks lost 2-1 to the Spokane Chiefs in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals Friday at the Rose Garden.

Spokane scored first, 2:11 into the game, in the first period s only goal.

The Chiefs scored again 4:25 into the second period on a power play goal to give Spokane a 2-0 lead.

The Winterhawks finally got on the board with a Ryan Johansen goal, with 24 seconds left in the third.

Winterhawks goaltender Mac Carruth stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced. Spokane s James Reid stopped 27 of 28 Portland shots.

The two teams meet again Sunday for Game 2 at the Rose Garden. The game starts at 5 p.m.
