PORTLAND In a joint statement released Thursday evening by Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber and Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, they expressed a preference for the composite deck truss bridge to cross the Columbia River on Interstate 5.

To ensure the future economic growth and prosperity of both Oregon and Washington, the report read, we must build the most safe, reliable, and cost effective option for the Columbia River Crossing project.

The statement was issued in response to the latest report from The Columbia River Crossing Bridge Review Panel. The composite deck truss was one of three designs the panel proposed.

The other two options were a cable-stayed bridge design and a tied-arch bridge design. The governors statement said those options would have a different environmental footprint and would require review of aviation impacts.

The composite deck truss, they said, simplifies construction risk, has a similar footprint as the open web bridge type, and meets the current schedule.

The governors told the Oregon and Washington Departments of Transportation to discontinue design work on a fourth option: the open web box girder design. That design was not recommended by the CRC panel.

The statement that the final bridge design must: be the most affordable, maintain scheduling, minimize environmental impact, provide the least risk and honor commitments made by all stakeholders in both states.
