PORTLAND -- A man lying in a Southeast Portland roadway was hit by a car and killed Thursday night, police said.
Emergency crews were dispatched about 8:30 p.m. to the crash at Southeast 173rd Avenue and Division Street.
The driver of the car told police he was headed eastbound on Division Street when he suddenly saw a man lying on the road and was unable to avoid hitting him, Simpson said.
The driver called police immediately and stayed to talk with investigators. The man he hit, later identified as 46-year-old Angelo Elton Tupper, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Simpson said police do not know why Tupper was in the roadway. There was no evidence to suggest he had already been hit by another car.
Tupper had been at a nearby lounge just before he was hit. Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call Officer Peter Kurronen at 503-823-2208.
Division Street was closed for about three hours during the initial investigation.
