PORTLAND -- Nike s long awaited Doernbecher Freestyle 2013 collection goes on sale Saturday with a product launch worthy of top athletes.
Patient-designed shoes and apparel with their personal story as inspiration.
Ten years ago, Nike approached Doernbecher Children's Hospital as a way of giving back to the patients and the community.
Over the ten years 58 young patients have designed footwear from their very personal perspective and with a message of strength and hope.
This year, seven designers told their story using clothing as well.
Each piece was designed with an attention to detail.
Since the program started, $8 million has been raised to support the medical work at Doernbecher.
The hospital is a horrible place to be if you're a kid, said Doernbecher s Dr. Dana Braner. When they come out on the other side Nike gives them this opportunity to be special and to design these shoes and do something amazing.
Saturday the designers will be on hand to meet and greet at the Nike s downtown Portland store.
This kind of recognition is a huge compliment to these patients that have gone through so much in their young lives.
The collection is a limited edition. It will be sold around the world starting Saturday. As of Friday, lines were already forming at Nike s store in New York City.
