PORTLAND-- Dive teams discovered mangled bicycles, old shopping carts and a skateboard on the bottom of the Willamette River Wednesday.

The divers from Multnomah County and Clackamas County Sheriff's Offices cleaned up trash along Portland's seawall.

We run into everything down there, said Sgt. Steven Dangler of the Multnomah County River Patrol.

The underwater trash can leech contaminants. It also poses a risk for divers.

We know that when we dive around this area, there is a lot of debris down there, said Dangler. It does create entanglement hazards.

After the day's clean-up project, Multnomah County River Patrol hauled away a pile of junk. Inmate work crews and the environmental cleanup group SOLV helped dispose of the bikes, chairs and other trash.
