SALEM, Ore. (AP) Oregon lawmakers have decided minors should not be allowed in tanning salon beds.
The bill passed the Senate 16-13 Thursday. It now heads to Gov. John Kitzhaber, who says he will sign it.
The restriction applies to people under 18.
One exception was allowed: They can tan with a doctor's note. An amendment to allow 17-year-olds to tan at a salon with a parent's permission was dropped.
Supporters say tanning beds, like cigarettes, cause cancer and should be off-limits to minors. Opponents say parents, not the state, should decide if teens can use tanning beds.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oregon women have the highest rate of death from melanoma in the country.
