PORTLAND - In response to a U.S. Department of Justice probe, the Portland Police Bureau has created the Behavioral Health Unit.

The unit was created to respond to people with mental illness or in crisis, the bureau said Tuesday.

In addition to crisis training, the unit will also provide enhanced crisis intervention training for officers who volunteer to respond to most crisis calls, a Mobile Crisis Unit Service Coordination Team.
