PORTLAND, Ore. -- A White House official has confirmed to KGW NewsChannel 8 that President Obama will visit Oregon next Friday.

The focus ofthe trip will be the President'seducation initiatives. Pres. Obama recently announced an Educate to Innovate campaigncalled STEM , designed to promote excellence inscience, education, engineering and math.

The President planned tovisit Intel Corporation in Hillsboro during the trip to Portland.He will tour the world s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility with Intel CEO Paul Otellini.Intel employs workers with the kinds of skills the STEM initiative is designed to develop.

Our position on the Pacific Rim makes us an ideal trading partner with markets all over the world, especially those interested in our leadership on innovative technologies, and Intel is a superb location to highlight the very cutting edge.

In his State of the Union, President Obama outlined a plan for winning the future by preparing our children to be competitive in the global economy. His plan calls for key investments in education to grow the economy and create more jobs.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan says that, while the President was committed to freezing overall discretionary spending, the White House recognizedthe need to expand investments in education. Duncan says the overall goal was educating our way to a better economy, and investing in education was vitalbecause every parent wants their child to have a better future.
