SALEM Neighbors helped capture an armed man accused of breaking into a car in Salem Friday, police said.

After hearing calls for help, residents near the 1800 block of Walker Road Northeast went to help a woman who saw her car being broken into around 6:00 p.m.

One of the neighbors confronted the suspect, 20-year-old Justice Selmer of Salem.

Selmer allegedly slashed at the neighbor with a 10-inch kitchen knife, but the neighbor blocked Selmer with his hand and punched him in the face, according to the Marion County Sheriff s Office.

Selmer fled the scene and Marion County deputies arrested him in a nearby parking lot.He was still carrying the kitchen knife.

Selmer was arrested on charges of attempted assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful entry into a vehicle.
