SALEM -- The Marion County sheriff's office says a Salem, Ore., man who fled after rolling his Chevrolet Impala at least two times and taking out a tree, mailbox and some shrubbery wound up in the chilly Pudding River before surrendering to deputies.

The man fell head-first into the water Tuesday while running from deputies, then refused to come out for nearly an hour. He finally surrendered when he got too cold and was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash.

The sheriff's office says 22-year-old Luis Daniel Hernandez was arrested for investigation of hit and run, interfering with a police officer, attempting to elude and DUI.
