HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. -- A unique U-cut Xmas tree operation in Happy Valley is focused on helping the community one toy at a time.
I do get called Santa Don, said Don Schneider with a gleam in his eye.
How could he not? For more than a quarter of a century, Schneider has run one of the most unique U-cut Christmas tree operations you'll ever see.
Sure Don has great trees, from Nordmann's to Nobles, but every family who hunts and saws down one of his trees also gets free toys for their kids.
You actually get 5 hot wheels not one, said Schneider to a young boy looking at hundreds of toys in Don's toy house which sits on his farm. We used to give hot wheels out to all the kids, that's how we began, then I learned girls don't like hot wheels.
That's when Don started buying toys at garage sales. I now go to 25 garage sales a week, he said.
The retired Boeing machinist spends thousands of dollars on those toys each year. He stores them in a massive pole barn on his property. From barbies and custom dolls, to -box games even bicycles.
Most of Don's customers return every year.
This is the 7th year for the Opshytosh family. After cutting a beautiful Nordmann Christmas tree, Simon and Tonya Opshytosh got a thrill watching their three daughters pick out gifts from Don's toy house. They settled on a beautiful doll house complete with furniture.
Thank you so much, we will see you next year and God bless you, said Simon Opshytosh to Don.
Christmas is about kids and that's why I do this, said 'Santa Don.'
