PORTLAND -- A man was arrested Sunday for breaking into a home and attempting to sexually assault a 6-year-old girl, police said.
Officers were called to the report of a burglary and attempted sexual assault just before 1 a.m. Sunday inside a home in the 6900 block of North Nashton Street, said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.
A 21-year-old resident at the house, Kyle Pulfrey, told arriving officershe had gone to check on the children sleeping in the home and found the suspect attempting to sexually assault a 6-year-old girl.
Pulfrey then pulled the suspect off of the child and physically struggled with him and dragged him into the living room as the female resident called 911, Simpson said.
Police believe the suspect, 21-year-old Pedro Santiago Machi-Menchu of Vancouver, entered the home through an open bedroom window. He was treated at a Portland hospital for injuries from the struggle and then jailed on charges of burglary and attempted sex abuse.
Machi-Menchu was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
