BEAVERTON, Ore. -- One of the area's first neighborhood shopping centers is getting a complete overhaul.
The Milltowner at Northwest Saltzman and Cornell Road, in the Cedar Mill neighborhood, was built in 1961 and named in honor of the cedar mill nearby.
Over the years it became a one-stop shop for service-oriented businesses. Sally Tate's Dog Grooming has been there for 40 years. She plans to retire when construction begins.
Al Patershall has been cutting hair nearby at Al s Barber Shop for 44 years. He said he wasn t sure what would become of his business.
But property manager Ryan Egge, of Bales Findley, said the buildings have outlived their usefulness. The plan is to completely rebuild the center and give it a more current look and feel. The center may even get a new name.
It's a difficult thing. It signals the beginning of the end, Egge said. If we can, we'd like to incorporate some of those tenants.
Walgreen's plans to relocate down the street, giving the center an opportunity to expand its footprint.
Demolition is slated to begin in 2015.
