PORTLAND -- The bicyclist who was struck by a van in Southeast Portland Wednesday afternoon and seriously injured has now been ticketed by police.
Hector Vizzuett Perez, 34, of Southeast Portland, was recovering in a Portland hospital, police said. On Monday he was cited for failing to yield to a vehicle while entering a roadway.
The accident occurred just before 4 p.m. Thursday along Southeast Division, east of 122nd Avenue.
The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team investigated. They said Catungal was driving westbound in the left turn lane on Division to turn left onto 122nd Avenue when the accident occurred.
It appears that Perez rode his bicycle out of the gas station lot on the northeast corner of the intersection, through stopped traffic in the westbound lanes of Division, and right in front of the van which was moving in the specified left turn lane, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.
Catungal was not cited.
Both directions of Southeast Division Street were closed east of 122nd Avenue for several hours following the crash.
An off-duty deputy at the scene was also transported to a Portland hospital with an unknown medical condition. No further information has been released on him.
