SEATTLE -- The Coast Guard says the crew aboard a 314-foot fishing vessel off the Washington coast managed to put out an engine room fire originally reported as uncontrolled.
No injuries were reported Monday among the 120 people aboard the Arctic Storm.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Nate Littlejohn says four other fishing vessels that responded to a Coast Guard call for assistance have evacuated 78 crew members and will take them to Westport, Wash. The remaining 42 crew members will continue staffing the Arctic Storm.
Littlejohn says the crew used a chemical firefighting system and sealed the engine room to douse the fire.
Plans are to tow the disabled vessel to Aberdeen, Wash. Littlejohn says it has 188,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board and 66,000 pounds of fish. There have been no reports of pollution.
The Coast Guard says the ship is owned by Arctic Storm, Inc. A spokeswoman did not immediately return calls and emails seeking comment.
