PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Thorns expect more than 13,000 fans at Sunday's match against the Seattle Reign at Jeld-Wen Field.
It is the Thorns' home opener and the first of a National Women's Soccer League rivalry the players hope will be as spirited as the rivalry between Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders.
The Thorns have sold more than 7,500 season tickets for their 11 home games.
The expected attendance far exceeds the average of 3,321 in the NWSL's opening week. FC Kansas City drew 6,784 fans for its home opener match against the Thorns last Saturday, which topped the league. That match ended with a 1-all draw.
Jeld-Wen Field seats just over 20,000 for Timbers matches.
