PORTLAND - A 22-year old Milwaukie-area woman was saved by some quick-thinking witnesses after her car rolled down a steep embankment and burst into flames Tuesday.

Oregon State Police said Larry Elverud, a Washington County Transportation Department employee, and two citizens pulled Andrea Hammond out of the car near Highway 47 north of Highway 26. OSP said the car had rolled while making a steep turn near Pebble Creek Road.

Elverud and two citizens went down to help as smoke began pouring out of the car. They were able to get Hammond up to the road and the car burst into flames a minute later.

Hammond was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. The car was destroyed.
